Project Description

Objective

General Atomics is a defense contractor headquartered in San Diego, California specializing in nuclear fission and fusion. GA also has an affiliate branch, General Atomics Aeronautical Systems in Palmdale, California where they manufacture Remotely Piloted Aircraft systems such as the Grey Eagle and Predator UAVs, radar, and electro-optic and related mission systems solutions. It also manufactures a variety of state-of-the-art digital Ground Control Stations and provides pilot training and support services for RPA field operations. General Atomics needed to upgrade its Innovative Infrastructure fiber-optic network at its Ground Control Station in their Grey Butte Airfield facility where it designs and develops UAVs.

Solution

VectorUSA engineers designed the Innovative Infrastructure project in accordance with IEEE 802.1 installation guidelines, the current edition of the NEC, NESC, Bisci Telecommunications Distribution Methods Manual, BICSI Cabling Installation Manual, and the latest issue of the ANSI/TIA/EIA Standards, along with all state and local codes and ordinances. VectorUSA provided and installed 1,600 feet of Sumitomo Air Blown multi-tube cable between the Gray Butte Command Center and the Communications building. VectorUSA engineers provided and installed wall-mounted enclosures and fiber optic termination hardware. All strands of the fiber optic cable were terminated with SC style connectors and dressed into wall rack-mounted enclosures.

As a result of VectorUSA’s work, communications and data between the Gray Butte Command Center and the Communications building were greatly improved – a key in the development and testing of RPAs such as the Grey Eagle and Predator UAVs.

VectorUSA was the Prime Contractor on this project, designing, managing, implementing and executing the full delivery of all products and services. At the completion of the project, VectorUSA provided training, management and trouble-shooting training of the complete solution. VectorUSA followed strict protocols relating to the sensitive environment.
