A thriving, year-round community of 60,000 residents offers first-class schools, a healthy real estate market, safe and clean streets, and plentiful parks, making it unique among Coachella Valley cities.

Challenge

This desert community faced performance and stability challenges with their network and had concerns around cybersecurity, given recent ransomware attacks on municipalities across the country.

The City’s goal of providing secure, reliable services to all residents and visitors through mobility, virtualization and cloud capabilities was jeopardized by the existing fiber, copper cabling and wired/wireless networks.

Solution

VectorUSA assessed the existing copper and fiber pathways, cabling, wired and wireless networks, and cybersecurity posture.

VectorUSA designed a complete network overhaul. The first step consisted of 1” and 2” conduit to bring the pathways up to current standards.

We then installed 196 Cat 6 cables and 300 feet of 12-strand, armored fiber to modernize the physical layer infrastructure. Aruba switches were then installed at the core and edge, with wireless access points to enhance mobility.

Aruba ClearPass was implemented to provide Network Access Control capabilities, improving three tenets of cybersecurity - Authentication, Authorization and Accountability.

The City now has full confidence in the reliability and durability of the network, all the way down to the physical layer.

The ability to control and confirm who has access to the network has dramatically improved the cybersecurity posture of the City.
